You’ll laugh. You’ll cringe. You’ll see a family trying to do their misguided best by each other, discovering themselves in the process. Holy Sh!ft uses humor and compassion to bridge the gap of fear and ignorance around gender presentation.
About this Project
Teenaged Tamara is keeping their parents up at night, not because they are sneaking out in lipstick and short skirts, but because they’ve shaved their head and used their allowance to buy mens’ jeans. Mike and Nora think of themselves as ‘fun’ Christian parents. Convinced that they need to save Tamara from a lifetime of suffering by getting her back on the straight (cis) and narrow, they hit on the idea of humiliating Tamara by cross-dressing. Nothing is cool after you’ve seen your parents do it. Right? Right.
But when Tamara treats their ‘coming out’ with the grace they’d like for themselves (What’s that? The golden rule?), Mike and Nora are forced to examine their own reactions to gender, especially in light of how the family is treated by their fellow Christians at the mini-golf course. When drag queens offer the family acceptance, what was intended to be a night of tough love might be the start of a personal revelation for the whole family. After all, they do say God moves in mysterious ways.
WHY…This?
Because humor humanizes and comedy that has love at its center is important in troubled times. Holy Shift! treats each member of the family with tender respect even when they aren’t sure how to do that for themselves or each other.
WHY…Now?
Bad actors in our political realm are using transgender identity to drive a wedge between families, neighbors, and communities.
WHY…Us?
It is time for good people to disarm this dangerous misconception that trans is dangerous. As a comedy, Holy Shift! uses laughter, vulnerability, and openness to bridge the fear of facing our true selves and embracing what we may not understand. Our team of talented filmmakers includes people who identify across the cis-het spectrum, straight-queer spectrum, and believer-atheist spectrum. We are united behind a good story and the desire to showcase that humanity, respect, and love for one another should be at the cornerstone of our communities and our society. Why…Does it Cost So Much?
Making a movie, even a short one, takes a village. Every minute you see on screen represents about fifteen hours of work spread across the dozen+ people working on set and pre- and post-production. From production design to vfx, we want to make a film that is worthy of your time and our vision.
